Archive for September, 2007
September is almost done!
Yay! It’s almost October. September is the toughest month of the entire year for me. I know this is a total exaggeration, but it feels like I do 90% of my “business” in September. Soon, I’ll have enough energy for a social life again, which includes blog posting.

On the listserv ili-l from ALA there was an announcement from a librarian in Pennsylvania announcing her new blog that does all the announcements for conferences sending our Calls for Proposals. Awesome! What a great idea for a blog, I hope she keeps up with it!
The topic areas she plans to cover are [...]
Q = Laurie, where are you planning to stay while at St. John’s?
A = MUN has a summer residence program that has a student rate of $25.00 per day. Yes, it’s residence life all over again but it’s on-campus, totally affordable, and there’s even a cafeteria. I’m there to be a student, not a tourist, so it seems workable to me.

Today it was around +6 and raining (maybe even a bit of wet snow) for my bike ride home and I was surprisingly comfortable. The only complaint I have is that my glasses fogged up and I couldn’t see, but I have an optometrist appointment next week to get contact lenses so that should [...]
Posted by Laurie on September 24th, 2007 under Environment, Other | Comment now »Q = Laurie, have you considered what kind of schedule you could put yourself on to get work done on your thesis before going to St. John’s?
A = Honestly, not initially but a mentor (Tim) pointed out that I still have to do a lot of preliminary work before actually going to St. John’s. When I whined about how I’m just too exhausted when I go home from work to be a student weekday evenings, he suggested using the weekends [...]
Posted by Laurie on September 22nd, 2007 under Laurie speaks! | Comment now »Q = Laurie, do you think it’s realistic to get a thesis done in 4 weeks?
A = You’ve never seen me type 70 words a minute, have you? All joking aside, no, I don’t, but I do think that I can make a major, major dent in it in 4 weeks. Going to MUN 10 months from now also gives me my first firm, non-negotiable deadline which I [...]
Posted by Laurie on September 22nd, 2007 under Laurie speaks! | 1 Comment »Q = Laurie, why can’t you just get your thesis research done in your own library?
A = When you’re a full-time reference librarian at a post-secondary institution, it’s very, very difficult to actually act like a student when there’s no other library in town that you can just go, research, and study quietly. Even my office isn’t a good place because it has a window facing into the library [...]

A = I’m doing a master of education specializing in information technology at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, which is based in St. John’s. I’m supposed to be working on my thesis but I’m finding it difficult to get it done for a variety reasons, some of which can be resolved by being on [...]

21 Ways to Lose Your Younger Employees
Let’s face it, as the Baby Boom generation counts down the days until their retirement (if they haven’t gone already) the workplace is radically changing and lately I’m feeling that some of these [...]
Just finished a cross-stitch for Mom for Christmas, “Berry Pickers” by Barbara Lavallee
I’m not ruining the surprise by putting this picture up, Mom picked out this cross-stitch herself. She’s a picky woman (in a good way) so I’d rather have her choose than go to all that effort to make her something she doesn’t like.
It’s Berry Pickers by Barbara Lavallee and I bought the [...]
