Labour Day feels more like New Years to me than January 1st so I need some resolutions!

We’re just a few days away from Labour Day. Thankfully, a holiday here in Canada! It also marks the start of the school year for most institutions of higher learning, including the one I work at. So, I find that it feels more like the beginning of the new year than January [...]

Becoming a librarian who teaches well (not just who teaches)

This post is inspired by an article from my favourite quilting magazine, Mark Lipinski’s Quilter’s Home. Issue September/October 2008, page 13, entitled Think about being a… Quilting teacher. Hopefully, they don’t mind I used their article as an inspiration and take it for the compliment that it is!

Be superior than. For most [...]

Trying out the new IFLA InfoLit logo

I like the new Information Literacy logo that IFLA has just launched and it seems like a fun way to promote information literacy with each work email I send. The international nature of it really appeals to me. So, I’ve added the English version to my signature of my work email. It’ll [...]

I totally love travelling west. The jet lag just isn’t as hard as it is going east!
Well, I’m back at the desk and getting geared up for another year of exciting librarianship! No doubt lots of blogging will result.
I also got my road bike tuned up while I was gone and some sweet [...]

Observed Library Behaviour: Defacing library materials

Maybe MUN’s library just wants to make sure that students understand the consequences of their actions, but there’s an inordinate amount of signage up warning students not to damage or deface books. Wow, and I thought my library loved its signage!
Thankfully, I have not been witness to any student defacing library materials but I [...]

Observed Library Behaviour: Being confused by different collections

I can’t believe I’m confessing this, but as a patron I’m realizing that I’m rather confused by books, that seem exactly the same to me, being stored in different locations based upon their lending periods.
Most of this confusion is coming from the Reserve section.
Without realizing what I was doing, I used the catalogue to look [...]
