Featured Visitor: Kathryn
Kathryn Greenhill is an Australian academic librarian who muses and enthuses about libraries and emerging technologies on her blog, Librarians Matter. She is part of the team that coordinates the blog Librariesinteract.info:blog central for Australian Libraries. She was a presenter in the Five Weeks to a Social Library grassroots online course. She also co-ordinates the Australian Libraries Building in Second Life.
Why did you choose library and information science as your profession?
It’s a balanced job where I get to use people skills and techie geeky skills, I am always focussed on helping people, some of the most interesting people I know are librarians, I get to discover wonderful information resources and all the trivia in my head is actually useful.
Why do you read blogs?
Initially because work asked me to find out how we could use them in out library. Keep doing it almost obsessively because it’s a wonderful conversation about professional practice and everything in between.
What do you see as the core business of libraries?
Acquiring, organising and providing information resources and associated services for the edification, professional activities, recreation and delight of our users in a way that promotes community and the strategic aims of our parent organizations.
What do you think is the most important issues affecting librarians today?
Service that you once could only get in a llibrary is being provided on a “convenience trumps quality” basis by other sources. Redefining how we serve our communities so that what we offer professionally continues to enhance other people’s lives.
What is your pet peeve about the blogosphere?
I can’t keep up with all that I want to. Not all my colleagues are reading blogs, so I can’t discuss my “current affairs” with them. When I write a carefully thought out or a totally contentious post, hardly anyone comments….but when I do a throw away post that takes hardly any effort – everyone comments on that one.
